Jesus Walks on Water - Peace in the Storm

Mar 15, 2026    Dr. James Johnson-Hill

John 6:16–21 (NIV)

When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

INTRODUCTION: When Obedience Leads You Into the Storm

We often assume that obedience leads to calm waters. We often assume that if we follow Jesus closely enough, storms will somehow miss us.

But John 6 reminds us that sometimes the storm doesn’t come because we disobeyed — sometimes THE STORM COMES BECAUSE WE OBEYED.

The disciples are in the middle of God’s will… and still fighting the wind.

This miracle is not about Jesus showing off His power over nature.

It’s about REVEALING HIS PRESENCE IN THE MIDDLE OF FEAR.

THE SETTING: Obedience Without Jesus in the Boat

After feeding the 5,000, Jesus sends the disciples ahead by boat… Night falls.

The sea grows rough… The wind intensifies.

John says something subtle but important: “Jesus had not yet joined them.”

They are obeying — but they feel alone… And I’m guessing that many of us can relate to that feeling.

We’re literally doing what Jesus asked… yet still exhausted, afraid, and overwhelmed.

THE STRUGGLE: Making Progress Without Peace

The disciples row hard… They’re not idle… They’re not careless… They’re fighting the storm with all their strength.

But the harder they row, the more obvious it becomes: effort alone won’t save them.

Some storms are DESIGNED TO EXPOSE THE LIMITS OF HUMAN STRENGTH.

JESUS’ APPROACH: Power Revealed in the Storm

[AND THE MIDDLE OF THE STORM…] while they are giving everything they have and still not making progress… Jesus comes to them walking on the water.

This isn’t just dramatic — it’s deeply symbolic.

The thing that threatens them becomes the surface underneath His feet.

What FEELS UNCONTROLLABLE to us IS COMPLETELY UNDER HIS AUTHORITY.

But instead of comfort, fear intensifies. They think He’s a ghost.

Fear distorts perception.

Sometimes God is closer than we realize — but we just don’t recognize Him in the storm.

JESUS’ WORDS: Peace Has a Voice

Then Jesus speaks: “It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

That phrase matters. Jesus isn’t just identifying Himself — He’s revealing His authority.

John does not clearly state whether the storms stops immediately or not… But what John clearly communicates is the fact that peace enters the boat when Jesus does… And sometimes that’s the miracle… HOLY PRESENCE BEFORE CIRCUMSTANTIAL CALM

John tells us that once Jesus enters the boat, they immediately reach their destination.

Take a close look at the order:

fear first || presence next || then arrival follows

Jesus doesn’t always calm the storm first… Sometimes He calms US first.

WHY THIS MIRACLE MATTERS FOR US

Storms come to everyone.

Faith doesn’t exempt us from hardship — But Faith anchors us in the midst of the hardship.

JESUS WALKING ON WATER REMINDS US…

Jesus is not overwhelmed by what overwhelms us

Jesus meets us where fear feels strongest

Jesus’ presence changes everything

THREE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAYS

HOW THIS MIRACLE STRENGTHENS OUR DAILY FAITH

1. OBEDIENCE DOES NOT ELIMINATE STORMS

The disciples were doing exactly what Jesus told them to do.

If you’re facing resistance, it doesn’t mean you missed God — it may mean you’re exactly where He wants you.

(Agape facing opposition from the neighbors)

2. DON’T LET FEAR REDEFINE GOD’S PRESENCE

Fear caused the disciples to misidentify Jesus.

When anxiety is high, clarity is low.

Ask yourself: Could Jesus be closer than I think — even in this storm?

3. PEACE COMES FROM WHO IS WITH YOU, Not What You’re In

Peace arrived when Jesus entered the boat.

Our peace isn’t rooted in calm circumstances — it’s rooted in the presence of Jesus!

CONCLUSION: Let Him In the Boat

Jesus doesn’t shout from the shore. He comes to you — right where the waves are crashing.

And He’s still saying the same thing: “It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

If you’ll let Him into your fear… you’ll find peace — even before the storm passes.
