Finding Your Identity in Christ

You’re not who the world says you are. You’re who Jesus says you are.

We All Wonder Who We Are

Let’s be honest—it’s easy to feel like our worth depends on our achievements, appearance, or how others see us. Whether it’s success at work, approval on social media, or even how “good” of a Christian we are, the pressure is real.

But God offers us something far better and far more secure: a new identity in Jesus.

At Agape, we believe your identity isn’t something you achieve—it’s something you receive. And the more you understand who you are in Christ, the more you’ll walk in peace, purpose, and freedom.

Who Does God Say You Are?

1. You Are Loved

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” — 1 John 3:1
This is the starting place. You are deeply, unshakably loved by God—not because of what you’ve done, but because of who He is.

2. You Are Forgiven and Redeemed

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” — Ephesians 1:7
Your past doesn’t define you. In Jesus, your story is rewritten by grace.

3. You Are a New Creation

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
You’re not who you used to be. In Christ, you’ve been made new—from the inside out.

Who You Are in Christ: A Quick List from Scripture

  • You are God’s child. (John 1:12)
  • You are chosen and set apart. (1 Peter 2:9)
  • You are free from shame and condemnation. (Romans 8:1)
  • You are handcrafted by God with purpose. (Ephesians 2:10)
  • You are victorious in Christ. (Romans 8:37)

These aren’t just feel-good statements—they’re truth, anchored in Scripture. And truth is what sets us free.

Why It Matters

The world is constantly shifting, but your identity in Jesus is rock solid.

It gives you stability.

“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”
— Isaiah 40:8
God’s promises don’t expire. When your identity is rooted in Him, you’re not tossed around by culture, trends, or opinions.

It breaks the comparison trap.

“If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
 — Galatians 1:10
You’re not in competition. You’re called. God doesn’t make duplicates—He made you on purpose, for a purpose.

It gives direction to your life.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord...
— Jeremiah 29:11
You don’t have to wonder if your life matters. It does. And your identity in Christ is the foundation of your calling.

How to Live Out Your Identity

Finding your identity in Christ is both a one-time gift and an everyday journey. Here’s how to keep walking in it:

Meditate on Scripture

Let God’s Word reshape how you see yourself. Write verses on sticky notes, read them aloud, or pray them into your day.

Ask God to show you

Sometimes we see ourselves through a distorted lens. Ask God for His perspective. He delights in reminding you who you are.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” — Psalm 139:14

Renew your mind

It’s a daily process. Keep turning your thoughts back to what God says is true.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2

Surround yourself with community

You weren’t meant to walk alone. One of the best ways to grow in your identity is by walking alongside others who are chasing after Jesus, too.
“Let us consider how we may spur one another on… encouraging one another.”
— Hebrews 10:24-25

Serve with your gifts

As you live out your identity, you’ll discover that you’re uniquely gifted to make a difference.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…”
— 1 Peter 4:10

But What About When It’s Hard?

Let’s be real: even when we know who we are in Christ, we still face doubt, insecurity, and temptation. You’re not alone in that.

When lies creep in, go back to the truth.

Jesus fought the enemy’s lies with Scripture—and so can you.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
— John 8:32

When you feel weak, lean on His strength.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9

When you mess up, come back to grace.

God’s grace isn’t a one-time thing—it’s new every morning.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful… and will purify us.”
 — 1 John 1:9

You Can Live From a Place of Confidence

Not confidence in yourself—but confidence in Jesus in you.
“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” — Philippians 1:6
You’re not an accident. You’re not overlooked. You’re not who the world says you are. You are who Jesus says you are.

Final Encouragement

If you’ve been struggling to find your identity, you’re not alone. But the truth is: you are loved, chosen, forgiven, and sent.

At Agape, we want to walk that journey with you. Whether you’re new to faith or just need a fresh reminder, we’re here for you.
Let Jesus define you—and watch what He does with your life.
